Local
landmarks/facilities

The
Jamboree Ward is home to Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre which is located
on Dandenong Road, Mt Ommaney. The shopping centre whilst remaining
open is undergoing a large redevelopment which will result in the
shopping centre providing twice as many shops as well as the
provision of many more car parks spaces.

The
Jindalee Homemaker Centre and the newly built DFO shopping centre in
Sinnamon Road, Jindalee are also located in the Ward.

Brisbane’s
largest riverside park, the Rocks Riverside Park which was opened on
7 December 2003 is also located within the Jamboree Ward. The park
features industrial artifacts from the Queensland Cement Limited
quarry, public art which reflects the sites industrial heritage, a
community amphitheatre, 800sqm of open grass areas, an 800m walking
track along the river, half basketball court and several play areas.
The park is also the venue for the free Movies in the Park events
sponsored by Cr Bourke through the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative
Fund.

For
those who are interested in outdoor activities there are also two
golf courses, (one public and one private) as well as the Jindalee
Boat ramp and several small bush reserves which are tended to by the
many dedicated local bushcare groups.

Origin
of the name of the Ward

Whilst
many people believe that the ward is named after the suburb Jamboree
Heights, the ward is in fact named after a Jamboree which was staged
by the Queensland Scouting Movement in 1967. This was only the 8th
Jamboree to be held in Australia.

History
of the Ward including suburbs

First
settled in the 1860’s, the Centenary suburbs have undergone many
changes over its long history. The Jamboree Ward started out as
farming land and has slowly developed into the diverse and vibrant
community it is today. Jamboree is a very leafy and green ward and
yet remains within a short drive of the Brisbane CBD. It includes the
suburbs of Jamboree Heights, Oxley, Corinda, Middle Park, Seventeen
Mile Rocks, Jindalee, Westlake, Mt Ommaney and Riverhills.
